Green lipped mussel - effects and ingredients

The Maoris in New Zeeland already knew of the healing effect of the green lipped mussel, native to this island. In the meantime even the Western civilisation has learned to appreciate its positive effects. Special active components help to prevent or eliminate pains in joints. In addition this mussel is also able to alleviate other disorders. Nowadays ten percent of the harvested quantity of green lipped mussel is used for the production of drugs and dietary supplements.

The effect of the green lipped mussel results from its valuable ingredients. It is rich in so-called glycosaminoglycan a complex protein-sugar-compound (GAG). Those compounds deliver important nutrients to joints and joint fluids. The most important part of the GAGs is the glucosamine. This molecule is required for building up of cartilage (chondroitin = compound of glucosamine), as well as for the viscous synovial fluid (hyaluronic acid = glucosamine + glucuronic acid). Furthermore it contains unsaturated omega 3 fatty acids as well as important minerals, trace elements, vitamins and amino acids.

These ingredients have a high anti-inflammatory effect and serve as natural painkillers. Unlike a direct painkiller they act through the nutritional process.

Green lipped mussel extract is suitable for all kind of breeds. Particularly for big and heavy breeds, athletic and active dogs as well as for small dogs with innate deformations a preventive administration is recommended.
